Faith, Business, and Letting Go: My Lenten Journey of Obedience
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
As Catholic women in business, we often find ourselves balancing ambition with obedience, strategy with surrender. Lent, a sacred season of reflection, repentance, and renewal, provides a perfect opportunity to pause and ask: Am I truly following God’s will in my business and life?
This question became deeply personal for me when I sensed God asking me to change my company’s business model. For years, I built and led a consulting firm, working with a team, serving clients, and striving to expand our impact. It was the vision I had carefully crafted, and it was working. But then, something shifted. In prayer, I felt a gentle but persistent call to step away from the structure I had built and embrace a simpler, one-person business model. The idea felt counterintuitive—almost like moving backward. Yet, in my heart, I knew it was an invitation to trust, to surrender, and to walk in obedience.
The Challenge of Change
Change is hard, especially when it involves letting go of something you’ve poured your heart and soul into. I wrestled with questions: What if this change fails? How will I sustain myself? Am I truly hearing God, or is it just my fear speaking?
Like many of us, I preferred certainty. I wanted a clear roadmap. But faith often requires us to step out without knowing every detail. The story of Abraham in Hebrews 11:8 became a source of strength for me: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go” (Hebrews 11:8).
Abraham didn’t have all the answers—he simply trusted God’s direction. I realized I needed to do the same.
Letting Go and Leaning in
Surrendering my business model wasn’t just a financial decision—it was a spiritual one. It required me to:
Let go of control: Instead of meticulously planning every step, I had to trust God to guide me one step at a time.
Redefine success: Success was no longer about growth metrics or client rosters; it became about alignment with God’s purpose for my life.
Rely on God’s provision: My security could no longer come from a structured business model but from God’s faithfulness.
Discovering the Hidden Blessings
Since making this transition, I’ve experienced unexpected blessings:
Clarity of Purpose: With fewer distractions, I have been able to focus on work that truly aligns with my calling.
Deeper Trust in God: This journey has stretched my faith in ways I never imagined, teaching me to depend on God daily.
More Meaningful Impact: Instead of chasing every opportunity, I now serve clients and projects that resonate with my mission.
Lessons for Catholic Women in Business
If you’re facing a transition or struggling with obedience in your business, here are some key takeaways from my journey:
Pray for Discernment: Take time in silence with God. Seek His direction rather than rushing into decisions.
Be Willing to Let Go: Sometimes, God asks us to release something good to receive something greater.
Trust in His Provision: The financial fears are real, but God is our ultimate provider.
Lean on Community: Surround yourself with faith-driven women who can pray with and support you.
A Lenten Invitation
Lent is a season of surrender, but it is also a season of grace. If God is calling you to change, don’t be afraid. Surrender your plans, and trust His. He sees the bigger picture. He knows what lies ahead. My journey of letting go hasn’t been easy, but it has been filled with purpose and peace. As we walk through this Lenten season, may we have the courage to say, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Are you navigating a season of change in your business? I’d love to hear your story and pray with you. Let’s walk this journey of faith together.
